KEMA executes technical analysis for ECF's Roadmap 2050: A practical guide to a prosperous, low-carbon Europe

Landmark study shows that EU’s 80% GHG reduction target by 2050, based on zero carbon power generation, is technically feasible and economically rational

April 13, 2010 – Today, the European Climate Foundation will launch the study 'Roadmap 2050: A practical guide to a prosperous, low-carbon Europe'. More than 200 senior policy makers, opinion leaders, media, board-level executives, business associations and civil society from all over Europe will attend this high level meeting in Brussels. As KEMA is one of the contributors to this study, CEO Pier Nabuurs will present the results of our technical analysis.

Climate and energy policies
The European Climate Foundation was founded by six funding partners in 2007. The organization aims to promote climate and energy policies that greatly reduce Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions and help Europe play an even stronger international leadership role in mitigating climate change.

Winning strategy
The Roadmap 2050 demonstrates that the pathway to decarbonizing Europe’s economy is the winning strategy for energy security, competitiveness, employement and prosperity. This technical, economic and policy analysis conducted by KEMA and other consultancies such as McKinsey & Company, Imperial College London and Oxford Economics shows that achieving the EU’s 80% GHG reduction target by 2050, based on zero carbon power generation, is technically feasible and economically rational. An urgent and fundamental shift in regulatory, market design and energy policy frameworks is required if Europe wants to reap the benefits from the low-carbon transition. The Office for Metropolitan Architecture has developed a graphic narrative. The study fits well with KEMA’s activities in the field of carbon and climate.

Launch
During the launch a high-level panel will discuss the near-term implications of this analysis for a whole range of policies at the EU and national level and assess the challenges that need to be addressed to make this a reality. The launch will also be attended by:

Mr Jerzy Buzak, President to the European Parliament
Mr Güther Oettinger, European Commissioner for Energy
Ms Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action
Mr Pedro Marin Uribe, Secretary of State for Energy, Spain
Mrs Teresa Ribera Rodriguez, Secretary of State for Climate Change, Spain

In the next issue of KEMA's relations magazine Global Contact an interview with ECF's CEO, Jules Kortenhorst, and an article on the KEMA study will be included.
