KEMA consults on occupational health and safety: a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment

Occupational health and safety is a cross-disciplinary area concerned with protecting the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in work or employment. As a secondary effect, it may also protect other members of the public who are impacted by the workplace environment. Since 1950, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) joint forces to improve occupational health worldwide. The reasons for establishing good occupational safety and health standards identified as:
- An employee should not have to risk injury or death at work
- One realizes that poor occupational safety and health performance leads to costs instead of benefits
- Occupational health and safety requirements are reinforced in (inter)national laws.

Safety is the calculation of risk based situations on the probability of the harm being realized and the severity of the consequences. This is the quantitative assessment. The qualitative assessment is the description of the circumstances by which the harm could arise.
